NOLAN

By morning, I knew with unwavering certainty that Eva was my mate.

I had dreamt of her all night, and our lore claimed that only happened between mates. I was convinced that she'd dreamt of me too.

Perhaps she had some mer blood in her. There had been many instances of mer breaking the rules and coupling with humans. The offspring could have been born looking entirely human, and their legs never transformed into tails, but they had enough mer blood to make them possible mates.

In my case, though, it wasn't enough. My mate needed to have mer royal blood. No one else would do for the crown prince of Poseidon City, the most powerful and prosperous of all mer communities.

My first stop of the day was Theo's.

When he opened the door, he was less than pleased to see me. "Why are you here so early? I was out into the wee hours of the morning because some thoughtless bastard was busy having a good time with a random human."

"Shush." I put a finger on his lips. "The servants might hear you."

He rolled his eyes. "We have only two. One is in the kitchen, and the other is nearly deaf."

"Eva isn't random, Theo. I think she's my mate."

He frowned, then laughed. "Get in here."

"No. Get dressed. We're going to the Oracle."

His mouth dropped open. "Are you serious?"

"Hurry. Go, go, go." I gave him a shove.

"This is a really bad idea, Nolan." He sighed heavily and turned around to get dressed.

The Oracle was tricky, and she demanded a stiff price for her predictions. I knew that, but it wasn't going to stop me.

"I can go by myself."

"Fine. I'll accompany you to the Oracle's home." He grunted, "But I'm coming under duress."

When we reached the Oracle's modest house, I knocked on the door.

With what she was charging for her predictions, she could live like a queen and employ an army of servants, but the crone was stingy.

"The crone sleeps late. We should turn around."

"It'll be fine." I knocked again. "I'm the prince. What is she going to do? Kick me out?"

Theo grimaced. "It's good to be a prince."

When the Oracle flung the door open, her eyes flashed daggers at us, and she barked in her nasal voice, "Who is fool enough to—oh. My Prince." Her eyes widened with recognition, and she curtsied arthritically. "My apologies. I didn't know it was you. Please, come in."

The Oracle's home was in disarray—books and baubles and thingamajigs on every surface, some stacked on one another. Though disorganized, she was the one we all relied upon for matters of the heart and the future.

She tightened her black robe around her as if she was cold. "Do you need a reading, my Prince?"

"Yes. On the matter of my mate."

A smile bloomed on her old face. "Ah, the matters of the heart. My favorite." She reached for my hand, examining the bruises first. "You two tussle?"

"Something like that," Theo said, covering for the fight.

"Boys," she said with an eye roll. She gave Theo a knowing glance, and I wondered if she knew where we had been last night.
